It is the Christmas season and a time of giving
and sharing the holiday spirit. In recent years, Law Enforcement has had
the opportunity to partner with organizations to help those less fortunate
have a Merry Christmas. Many Police Departments in Oregon participate in
Shop with a Cop, Christmas with a Cop, or Annual Toy Drives. This allows
our communities to see how our Officers give back and support those who may
need us the most.
A touching story that I am familiar with begins
with an Officer responding to a call for service the day before Christmas
Eve. During the call for service, the Officer talked with a 5 year-old boy
who explained that his mother was not home because she was working and his
father was in the hospital. The boy was staying with his 14 year-old sister
who confirmed why their parents were gone. The sister explained their
family might not have Christmas because they were focused on their father
getting better. The Officer worked quickly to put together a dinner, a
Christmas tree, and presents for everyone in the family. On Christmas Eve
the patrol team delivered Christmas to this family. The Officers were
surprised to see the father had been discharged from the hospital and the
family was together. The family was overwhelmed by the generosity and
expressed that they would not have had a Christmas if not for this Officer.
As Chiefs, we know that our Officers show acts of
generosity to individuals in need every day. I believe it is extra special
when that generosity is during the Christmas season. Below you will see
Oregon Departments who are participating in this Christmas spirit. Merry
Christmas to all of our members and stay safe!
